The great German playwright Friedrich von Schiller remarked two centuries ago that friends show us what we can do, while foes teach us what we should do. Historically, Russia and Germany have been both close collaborators and mortal enemies whose tried and tested relationship laid the groundwork for peace and prosperity in Europe over the past 50 years or so.
