Ethiopia & Eritrea declare end to 20-year war
The leaders of Ethiopia and Eritrea have agreed to formally end the war that was frozen in 2000, clearing the way for a normalization of relations. Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed and Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki made the declaration in the Eritrean capital of Asmara on Monday. Traffic and telephone links between the two countries are soon expected to resume again for the first time in 20 years. Eritrea seceded from Ethiopia in 1991, and the two countries fought a border war from 1998 to 2000.
