Eleven injured in Walmart stabbing spree (VIDEOS)

Local police in Traverse City, Michigan have said the suspect is in custody
Eleven injured in Walmart stabbing spree (VIDEOS)

At least 11 people were stabbed at a Walmart in Traverse City, Michigan, US on Saturday, police said. The suspect was detained at the scene.

The Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office said officers were investigating a “multiple stabbing incident.”

“Details are limited at this time,” the department wrote on X.

Health officials said that 11 victims have been hospitalized at Munson Medical Center.

Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael Shea told reporters that the stabbings occurred near the checkout area and appeared to be random. He said ordinary citizens helped detain the suspect, who was wielding “a standard holding knife-style weapon.”

FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino said, “FBI personnel are responding to provide any necessary support to the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office in their investigation of the attacks at the Walmart.”

A video posted online reportedly shows a civilian holding the attacker at gunpoint and ordering him to drop the knife.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer expressed condolences to the victims and their families, saying she was “grateful to the first responders for their swift response to apprehend the suspect.”

The US has seen a rise in rampage-style attacks in public spaces, including shopping centers. In 2019, a far-right extremist killed 22 people at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas.
