Trump’s plan to take over Gaza is ‘ethnic cleansing’ – Hamas political chief

Trump’s plan to take over Gaza is ‘ethnic cleansing’ – Hamas political chief

President Donald Trump’s plan to take over Gaza and move the Palestinians out to surrounding Arab countries would amount to “ethnic cleansing” and a “crime against humanity,” Bassem Naim, head of the Hamas political branch told RT in an exclusive interview on Friday.

Trump floated the idea of the US owning the enclave on Tuesday at a press conference alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He reiterated his previous call to relocate the Palestinians outside of the enclave, at the expense of neighboring states. The US president described his vision of turning Gaza into the “Riviera of the Middle East,” after leveling the ruins left by 15 months of war between Israel and Hamas.

Naim, who currently leads the militant group’s political bureau, stressed that the people of Gaza should choose for themselves where they live. “We believe that Palestinian people are mature enough to decide for themselves, and they can choose where to live and how to live. This is our land,” he said.

“I think the solution for all this destabilization in the region is to solve the Palestinian cause by giving the Palestinian their genuine right of independence, self-sovereignty, right of return,” Naim stressed.

Palestinians have had to rebuild Gaza numerous times in the aftermath of previous conflicts, he said, adding that refugees are eager to return to the enclave, despite knowing how devastated it is.

Trump’s plan to deport the Palestinians and take over Gaza would be a “war crime,” Naim insisted.

“This is a crime against humanity. This is ethnic cleansing.”

According to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, Trump has approached neighboring states Egypt and Jordan, and has been “very vocal” stating that he expects them to take in Palestinian refugees.

Both Cairo and Amman have firmly rejected any such initiative.

Jordan’s King Abdullah II underscored his firm rejection of any attempts to displace the Palestinians, the country’s royal court said in a statement on Wednesday.

According to a Thursday press release, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty has contacted his counterparts in neighboring Arab states, in an effort to “thwart the US proposal of displacing the Palestinian people out of their territories.”
